As a longtime resident of North Carolina, I have had the opportunity to see and visit many beautiful places from its mountains to the sea. And, while I have long preferred the quiet beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway or Grandfather Mountain to the sand and surf, my family and I recently visited a beach location that quickly became a favorite. This North Carolina tourism gem is the coastal town of Oak Island.

Incorporated in the late 1990s and located an hour from Wilmington, family-friendly Oak Island is just the place to spend a relaxing week or weekend. You will find uncrowded beaches that all but beg you to stroll along the shoreline searching for sea shells or merely spread a towel and listen to the waves. Oak Island, like many beach areas, has a variety of local shops offering items that range from quirky memorabilia and beach apparel to sensational seafood restaurants (be sure to check out Jones’s Seafood Restaurant-the food is fantastic!). There are ice cream parlors, surf shops, a miniature golf course which includes a game room, playgrounds and restaurants with live music. In addition, there are a number of family friendly places to visit all within a short driving distance. Our personal favorite was taking the ferry over to the Fort Fisher Aquarium. The Aquarium is one of the 3 in North Carolina, and is considered by most to be the best. Other activities include visiting the Oak Island Lighthouse, exploring the nearby town of Baldhead Island or Southport where you will find a selection of antique stores, a Christmas Shoppe and other unique shopping locations.

Oak Island is just the place to get away from it all and reconnect to what matters most to you. So, if you are looking for a new vacation location, why not give Oak Island a visit? You’ll be glad you did.

North Carolina tourism offers more than a dozen hands-on museums designed especially with children in mind, but perhaps one of the best is found in Charlotte. For a unique hands-on learning adventure, make plans to visit the Discovery Place. As one of the best children’s museums in America, this is truly a great family activity.

As you enter Discovery Place, you will see that there is a special area just for those little one who love to crawl around as they explore. With the toddler-sized displays and activities, even the youngest in your group can have fun. As you continue down the hall, there is an assortment of hands-on exhibits. (When we went, there was a large pendulum and gears machine that worked much like an oversized spiral graph which you could use to draw amazing patterns simply by giving the arm a push.)

In the Science Circus you will learn how circus acts like tightrope walking, acrobatics, contortionist and other Big Top acts use science. While there, you can even walk the tightrope or swing and flip on the bungee seat similar to those used in training by trapeze artist. The Planetarium has automated dinosaurs and then as you meander the Rain Forest you will see a variety of reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds. Most days, there are teaching sessions where you can pet the animals and talk to those who care for them.

Discovery Place also has an OMNIMAX theater which shows films on various scientific discoveries and historic events-you will need to check their website to know what the feature offering is when you visit. There is also a section where you and your children can arrange an assortment of textiles, blocks and other manipulatives into patterns of your own choosing. Also onsite is a dining area where you can enjoy a meal without needing to leave the museum.

Get into the act as you walk the tightrope!

One of the dinos seen in the Discovery Place Planetarium.

So, come explore one of America’s top rated hands-on museums. You will laugh and learn while spending a day playing at the Discovery Place.

Starting January 2010 North Carolina will be a non-smoking state. That’s why I suggest you avoid the state until that time if you care about your health and the health of your family. The people of North Carolina are the type that will stop on the road and help you change a tire but only recently passed the smoking ban. I thought that was odd and contradictory.
Anyway, you can now visit North Carolina and enjoy any restaurant or bar without having to suffer due to the bad habit and weakness of another person.

Traveling through North Carolina? You might want to rethink that after you hear a little of what this state has to offer. North Carolina is full of things to see and do with some of the most beautiful scenes in the Southeast. From the beaches to the mountains and everything in between, there is something here for everyone! The outdoors scene in North Carolina is certainly one of the most diverse in the Southeast. With the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the coast to the east you’ll find some of the most breathtaking views that nature has to offer. Here are a few highlights.

Ashville, N.C.

Asheville, N.C. is home to the largest privately owned home in the United States, The Biltmore House. It features 4 acres of floor space, 250 rooms, 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces. The basement alone would house a swimming pool, gymnasium and changing rooms, bowling alley, servants’ quarters, kitchens, and more. The estate would be the home of George Vanderbilt when it opened on Christmas Eve, 1895. The home is located on 125,000 acres of beautiful countryside. To this day, Biltmore is still family owned! They also have a winery and spa that also makes it well worth the trip! Obviously, this is a must see!

Highlands, N.C.

If you’re looking for better view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, then Highlands, N.C. is the place to start. There are plenty of hiking trails as the Appalachian Trail winds through the hills and plenty of areas for picnics and nature viewing. Many motor cyclist take advantage of the winding roads that pass through Highlands every year as well. There are also several waterfalls worth taking a look at such as “Bridal Veil Falls”. You can see the falls from your car when you drive under it or if you are more adventurous you can actually walk underneath the falls. In downtown Highlands you’ll also find great shopping and dining opportunities which means fun for the whole family.

Cherokee, N.C.

If history is something that you’re interested in, you might check out the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Cherokee, N.C. There you’ll find the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, “Unto These Hills” outdoor drama, Oconaluftee Indian Village, arts & crafts, souvenir shops and other family oriented attractions.

Cashiers, N.C.

Cashiers is another nice mountain town with great shopping like “The Bungalow Boutique”. Here you’ll find plenty of chances to catch views of waterfalls and experience the slower pace of life they’re used to in Cashiers.

Hickory, N.C.

Coming off the mountains you can head to Hickory, which is home to the minor league baseball team the Hickory Crawdads, a Class A affiliate of the Texas Rangers major league baseball club. Hickory is loaded with golf courses and wineries to satisfy your appetite for relaxation at its best. Hickory is also known as “The Furniture Capitol of The World” where you can find great deals on major brand name furniture and tons of locally owned stores. Hickory is definitely worth checking out!

Concord, N.C.

If you are a NASCAR fan the Concord is just the place for you. Take a day and tour Lowes Motor Speedway or the Dale Earnhardt Museum and get a taste of the rich history of racing in the state of N.C.

Charlotte, N.C.

The city of Charlotte has all that some big cities have to offer without all the hassle. Charlotte is the home of the Carolina Panthers NFL team as well so if you are in town you won’t want to miss an opportunity to see an exciting NFL game!

Jockeys Ridge of the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks

Along the North Carolina coast you’ll find some of the finest beaches in the world. There are plenty of accommodations for your family vacation or your weekend getaway. The Outer Banks is the place to go for the best coastal lifestyle experience. Lighthouses such as the Bodie Island Lighthouse provide some of the most picturesque scenes on the east coast.

You may also want to skip over to the Wright Brothers National Memorial at the site of the world’s first controlled power flight. You may also check out the Dare county Civil War Trail which is a great way to go back in time and experience a fascinating time in the history of the Outer Banks.

When it comes to dining you’ll find no better place than The Outer Banks. It is home to over 160 locally owned and operated restaurants serving up the most fresh, locally caught seafood as well as a diverse selection of culinary delights. You’ll find everything from Italian to Fried Chicken served in the unique atmosphere of The Outer Banks.

I hope that you have found a few things that might interest you in the beautiful state of North Carolina. We have barely scratched the surface, in fact. Time and space will not allow me to go on to tell of the history of the 2009 Men’s Basketball National Champions, the North Carolina Tarheels, or the great history of Wilmington. However, as you can see, there is more to North Carolina than meets the eye!

Gas cost about half of what it did last year but many are still staying home this summer. While the economy may justify cutting back on expensive trips I believe this only presents new opportunities to visit places close to home. For those living in the Southeast this is an excellent time for a Staycation. A staycation is a vacation that is close to home. By staying close you save money on airfare and other cost of long distance travel. To save even more you can bring a cooler for food and even look at camping as a cheaper means of lodging. Many campsites have showers meaning you’ll be just as clean and spiffy for your day activities as if you stayed in a luxury hotel.

I’ve been using this economic downturn as an opportunity to visit many places within a few hours of my home in Georgia. If you want to learn more about Georgia staycations I have a page for that as well as pages for North Carolina staycations and South Carolina staycations. Each page offers affordable ideas for trips that are close to home. If you have ideas of cheap and affordable southeast vacations please comment to help other readers.

North Carolina is a favorite travel destination and the North Carolina tourism industry is doing well despite the current economic downturn. This is probably due to the many fun but inexpensive vacation destinations in N.C. From Asheville to the Outer Banks you and your family can find cheap vacations.

The Outer Banks is laid back with few of the “touristy” things you find in places like Myrtle Beach. For the lover of the outdoors and those looking for a quiet vacation OBX is the perfect vacation. You can visit Kitty Hawk, fish, kayak, tour lighthouses, or simply hang out on the natural beaches and take in the sun.

Asheville, NC is a surprise to those that have never visited. Many mountain tourist towns are filled with cheesy T-shirt and chocolate shops while Asheville is more like a college town in the mountains. The hip locals sell their art in small shops (plan on buying unique pottery), play music on the street, and offer other fun and free entertainment (tip if you can). The local restaurants in Asheville are to die for so plan on eating at as many local establishments as you can. Asheville is filled with great Bed and Breakfasts if you want to stay in an old Asheville home. Don’t overlook the outdoors that surrounds Asheville either as there are great trails and rivers for fishing and boating. There’s also a big house in Asheville that people like to tour.

I love North Carolina and know that you’ll love it too, if you don’t already. My North Carolina tourism guide will teach you about North Carolina and show you the best things to do and see.
