
To view the one of the largest pieces of exposed granite in the world, a trip to Stone Mountain Park Georgia is a must. The towering granite mountain has a peak of 1,686 feet with a surrounding plane of 825 feet. Not only does Stone Mountain stretch a third of a mile above ground, but it also stretches underground for 9 miles into Gwinnett County of Metropolitan Atlanta. The Mountain is best known for being the site of the largest bas-relief in the world. The figures of Confederate heroes Stonewall Jackson, Jefferson Davis, and Robert R. Lee are carved on its northern face. During the summer months you can see amazing laser shows complete with music and fireworks are also viewed here.
Activities & Attractions at Stone Mountain:
Stone Mountain is place where the whole family can have fun. From wooded trails perfect for hiking or biking to the sky lifts to the mountain top, water activities like swimming, boating or fishing to the petting zoo and museum there is sure to be something to appeal to young and old alike. To get you started on a few Stone Mountain activities, be sure to include some of the following on your “To Do”.
o Confederate Hall- This museum offers a chance to brush up on Civil War history through displays, documentary and exhibits. You will also learn about the area’s history, geology and ecology.
o Antebellum Plantation and Farmyard- This open air exhibit has 19 recreated historic buildings that give one a glimpse in to pre-Civil War plantation. There is an assortment of farm animals that can be fed and petted.
o The Crossroads offers miniature golf, duck rides (a large duck-shaped boat), stores, restaurants, and craft demonstrations.
o The Scenic Railroad- A great way to see the outskirts of the Stone Mountain Park is by riding this diesel locomotive. A guide will point out significant locations and be glad to answer any questions.
o The Great Barn- A favorite children’s area. Here your young ones will find interactive games, climbing walls, trampoline floors and much more. More climbing fun can be found at the Sky Hike rope adventure course.
o The Riverboat- Take a cruise on Stone Mountain Lake aboard a Mississippi riverboat. You will see much of the park from the deck of this beautiful boat.
o Hiking- There are 4 trails great for hiking at Stone Mountain. They are the 1 mile Walk Up Trail to the top of the mountain, the 5 mile Cherokee Trail that loops around the mountain’s base, the ¾ mile Nature Garden Trail, and the two 1 mile Songbird Habitat Trails meander through woodlands and plants. It should be noted that dogs are not allowed on the Walk Up trail or the Songbird Trails.
o Additional Stone Mountain Park attractions are 732 bell carillon, an 1892 covered bridge, and 1869 grist mill.
