Planning your Florida Key’s Vacation
Everyone needs a vacation from time to time, and there is nothing quite like a Florida Keys vacation to truly get away from it all. To help you make your vacation plans, here are a few Florida Keys area favorites.
Key Largo, Big Pine Key, Pigeon Key, Long Key, and southernmost Key West…these are the islands of the Florida coast known collectively as the Florida Keys. The relaxed atmosphere, island fare, and a myriad of activities, both on and off the water, have long made the Keys a favorite destination for many Americans. As you plan your Key West vacation, don’t overlook the great attractions and activities in the other Florida Keys location. To help in planning your trip, here are a few suggestions:
- John Pennekamp Coral Reef Parkway State Park (Key Largo)-This is the site of continental America’s largest living coral reef. You will find exceptional snorkeling and scuba diving, can sign up for glass bottom boat excursions, stroll along the boardwalk, hike the nature trails or sit quietly on the observation deck watching the birds and other animals who live here. Nearby is the marine sanctuary where you can get a closer look at the sea animals and marine mammals.
Theatre of the Sea (Islamorada) – This is a special favorite for children. You can watch the dolphins, sea lions, and sharks show off their skills at the programs and demonstrations. A special favorite is being able to swim with the animals.
Museums and Nature Center of Crane Point Hammock (Marathon)- Learn about pirates, regional Native Americans, ship wrecks and coral reefs through the exhibits and displays here. You will also enjoy walking the nature trails and seeing the indigenous plant and animal life. Also on location is the Florida Keys Children’s Museum with its interactive hands on displays and centers.
Bahia Honda State Park (Bahia Honda Key) – With its white sandy shores and animals, this is considered one of America’s most beautiful beaches.
Sand Key – This islet has an iron lighthouse and much more to be discovered as you scuba dive or snorkel the coral reefs. The diving here is touted as some of the best in the Caribbean.
Once you reach the famed Florida Keys, take some time to ask the locals what their picks are for food and fun, and then get ready to have a fantastic time.
