Downtown Athens
If you’re from Georgia you know about Athens and how much fun the town can be on a football game day or during a festival in the spring. Athens is one of my favorite towns in the Southeast and I even spent a few years there. From great Athens restaurants like The Grill and Weaver D’s to cool shops and used bookstores to beautiful homes Athens is a real treat for the first time visitor and for those that have been there a hundred times. Athens, Georgia is the type of place that grows on you and becomes part of you making each return like a return home.
There are many Athens tourism opportunities including tours of the various museums, watching a sporting event, walking the State Botanical Garden, catching a band, or seeing a play; but the best thing for visitors in Athens is to hang out downtown and on the north UGA campus and simply “take it in.” Athens is a casual town where you can dress down and be yourself. My advice is to drive to downtown Athens, park your car, and get out and walk. Grab lunch at The Grill, visit Jackson Street Books, buy a UGA T-shirt, and then walk the UGA campus. After that drive to the State Botanical Garden and walk the trails to enjoy one of the best collections of native and international trees and plants in the Southeast.
If you are a Georgian take some time this spring to visit Athens and if you are touring the Southeast make sure to swing by this lovely and sophisticated Southern town for a taste of the best of the South.
